Summary

Offering a 35mm equivalent of 24mm for Micro Four Thirds shooters, the silver M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12mm f/2.0 Lens from Olympus is a fast prime lens featuring a full metal construction for durability. The 12mm benefits from an aperture range of f/2-22 and utilizes DSA, aspherical, ED, and Super HR elements to control aberrations for greater clarity and color accuracy. Additionally, the lens features a seven-blade circular diaphragm for pleasing out-of-focus elements.

The lens features a Movie-Still-Compatible autofocus system for silent focusing even when tracking a subject in video. Along with autofocus, manual focusing is possible through a snap ring on the lens body that features a distance indicator. The lens focuses from 7.9" to infinity and accepts 46mm filters.

Features

A compact size that can produce high image quality is thanks to the rational design

A rational lens design of 11 elements in 8 groups enables a compact form and excellent image capture. To ensure clear imaging performance even under unfavourable conditions such as when shooting against the light, the lens surfaces are coated with ZERO Coating, which eliminates previously hard-to-prevent issues with ghosts and flares.

DSA (Dual Super Aspherical) lens

Olympus was the first company in the world to successfully mass-produce the Dual Super Aspherical lens that features an extremely large ratio of thickness between the centre and periphery.

Super HR (Ultra High Refractive Index lens) lens

This lens features high refractivity and high spherical aberration correction capability.

ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) Coating

k

This anti-glare coating is an application of a state-of-the-art multilayer film disposition technology Olympus developed for microscopes. This coating cuts the reflectance of wavelengths between 450 and 650 nm in half compared to the previous coating technology. As well as offering clear images, this technology also helps maintain the lens's low reflectivity by preventing scratches and degradation due to the enhanced strength and durability made possible by vacuum deposition. This coating features high transmittance and minimises hard-to-prevent artefacts such as ghosts and flares to ensure clear imaging performance even under unfavourable conditions, such as when shooting against the light.

Effective under low light conditions. Large bright F2.0 aperture and in-body image stabilisation

k

Users will enjoy the expanded low-light shooting capability. This is thanks to the wide 12mm angle (equivalent to 24mm of 35mm film camera) and a large aperture of F2.0 as well as the image stabiliser built into the body of all Olympus OM-D and PEN series cameras. Besides typical low-light environments such as dusk or indoors, this lens makes it possible to shoot brilliant wide-angle pictures in locations where a tripod cannot be used as well as in locations where flash use is prohibited (such as zoos).

The MSC (Movie and Still Compatible) mechanism provides fast, quiet AF for both movies and still images

k

Olympus enhanced the inner-focusing system of interchangeable lenses adopted by conventional SLRs. A screw drive mechanism is used for the drive method for quick, smooth, quiet, high-precision AF (autofocusing). The MSC mechanism incorporated in the ED 12mm F2.0 is the product of advanced optical design technology, developed to enable autofocusing with a lightweight lens element.

Driving the focusing lens using a sub-micron precision metallic shaft and feed screw

kA.Feed screw B.Metal axis

The gears have been removed, eliminating operational noise. A sub-micron precision metal axis (shaft) and feed screw are used for efficient, direct driving of the lightweight focusing lens. Enabling faster and quieter autofocusing.

Equipped with an advanced Snapshot Focus mechanism that lets you shift your focusing point to a specific distance

The lens comes equipped with the Snapshot Focus mechanism, which enables deep-focus shooting (in which both subject and background are focused) by using this feature with an appropriate aperture setting. Sliding the focus ring towards you moves the focusing point to a specific distance, while rotating the focus ring moves the focus distance within the scale range indicated on the lens cylinder.

  • As for relationships between the F numbers and focus distance, refer to Depth of Field Table.
  • We recommend that you narrow the aperture to F5.6 or higher.

How to set to deep focus

  1. Set the camera's mode dial to A or M mode, and set an appropriate aperture value (e.g. F8.0).
  2. Slide the focus ring towards the camera to set the lens into Snapshot Focus mode.
  3. Rotate the focus ring to set the focus distance (e.g. 3m).

Characteristics of deep focus photography

k
  • Both subject/foreground and background can be focused
  • You do not miss any photo opportunities without using AF
  • Lets you take photos under conditions where it is difficult to use AF

Sophisticated textured metallic finish for a stylish, classic look in a highly compact design

k

This lens was designed to be appreciated and used for years to come by adopting a sophisticated textured metallic finish and classic look in a very compact design. Olympus pursued the highest quality in terms of Light, Technology and Materials used. It is easy to recognise this attention to quality and performance at a glance.
